Casino Lyon France Wikipedia

First erected in medieval times, the building originally served as the 'Confrérie des frères pontifes' (est. 1184), a pontifical meeting-place and refuge for both traveling and local members of the clergy. However, when the first doctor Maître Martin Conras was hired in 1454, 'Hôtel-Dieu' became a fully functional hospital, one of the most important in France. As Lyon was a city known for its trade and seasonal fairs, many of the early patients were weary travelers of foreign descent.

In 1532, 'Hôtel-Dieu' appointed former Franciscan/Benedictine monk-turned-doctor and great Humanist François Rabelais, who would write his Gargantua and Pantagruel during his tenure here. Renaissance poet Louise Labé lived just beyond the western limits of the building.

Massive expansion projects in the 17th century by Guillaume Ducellet (under Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu) and in the 18th century by Jacques-Germain Soufflot (under Louis XIV and Jean-Baptiste Colbert) replaced the original building with the grandiose wings and courts we know today. In fact, at its greatest point, the hospital extended from its present position beyond Place Bellecour to engulf the area now occupied by the central post office.

'Hôtel-Dieu' houses the 'Musée des Hospices Civils' a permanent exhibit tracing the history and practice of medicine from the Middle Ages to modern time and includes a fine collection of apothecary vases amongst other objects.

In May 2015, it was announced that the building, which ceased to function as a hospital in 2010, will be converted to a luxury hotel, the InterContinental Lyon, opening in 2018.[1]

I spent 3 nights at this hotel with my 9 year old son. Ideally located, all visits on foot. The rooms are immaculate, very spacious and practical refurbished, see photos. I had room 100 which overlooks Place Célestin, a magnificent view. The breakfast at 6 € defies all competition at this price, French style, plentiful with fresh bread, orange juice etc … The manager (I suppose) is very pleasant and smiling, at the service of her customers. The young girl who works the weekend too. No elevator but not inconvenient. No air conditioning, a fan, it can be complicated in summer but it suited us perfectly. Very well soundproofed, no noise nuisance from the square. In view of the prices, I will come back with great pleasure!
I am delighted with my stay in this hotel located in the heart of Lyon, ease of movement and proximity to tourist places and shops.
Small, very cozy room, renovated, nice decor and top bedding. Excellent value.
I slept better there than at home, that’s a sign.
I will definitely be back. What a great discovery.
We have slept twice in this little hotel in the center of Lyon.
Good bedding, breakfast at the perfect value for money and with a superb view of the theater, clean and quiet. We recommend.
Choice of this hotel for the New Year, ideal location for visiting Lyon, the street where the entrance to the hotel is located is not very pleasant and not very secure especially at night, beautiful view from our room on the theater square, single room and correct, renovated and clean bathroom, the lack of elevator did not pose a problem for us being still young and flexible to climb the floors. breakfast very correct for the price, underground parking is under the place of theater a few meters from the hotel.

Ideal location to visit the old and typical streets and restaurants of the charming city of Lyon.
